Match Report by Simon Corbett
On a pleasant Sunday afternoon the league leaders travelled to Worcester to play Nunnery Wood Utd Women at the University on the 3G pitch. Mark Taylor made two changes were made with Grace Finch and Jess Kenny returning to the starting line up.
It was the home side who had the better of the early exchanges with Evesham failing to get into any sort of rhythm. The first corner put the visitors under pressure and though it was cleared, it was clear to see that this was going to be a very competitive game with no quarter given.
Evesham’s first chance came when a free kick found the excellent Beattie Jutel at the back post. Her shot however was straight at the keeper. The home side moved the ball well and an attack down the left saw an effort on goal but with no real power behind the strike.
A Nunnery corner found a head in the box but that was cleared by Jutel on the line. A couple of corners from the returning Kenny were also cleared away and fierce Finch shot at the near post was saved.
The breakthrough came after 25 minutes and probably a little against the run of play. A superb through ball found Saff Boswell who cooly beat the keeper for 0-1.
The away side were then getting on top with the Yaz Gachette and Liv Tresigne in midfield giving the home side no time and space, the defence of Zoe Bloss, Kyra Bostock, Chopper Pitts and Jutel dealing with the home sides long balls forward.
Tresigne was feeding through balls to Finch on the left but her efforts were saved whilst Boswell shot over when well placed. Bostock went on a mazy run, running the length of the field before being disposed as she was about to square the ball in the box. HT 0-1.
The visitors were quickly on the front foot in the second half when a flowing move found Kenny who shot just wide. A move on the left from Finch and Jutel saw the later cross dangerously into the area but it just evaded Boswell. Boswell then expertly lobbed the keeper and the ball hit the post.
Substitutes were made with Kate Mills, Chloe Dyer and Grace Dolphin introduced. The game was on a knife edge with the home side still having plenty of possession so Evesham had to remain alert. GK Chloe Raxter was on hand to come off the line on sweep any dangerous through balls. Mills and Dyer were giving the Nunnery defence no time on the ball with their tenacity and forward running and Dyer was unfortunate not to score when well placed.
With ten minutes remaining Kenny found the more advanced Jutel who deservedly tucked home to make it 0-2 and a more comfortable final few minutes or so was thought?
Dyer committed a foul in the area on Nunnery Captain Becky Evans and a penalty was awarded. Evans took the penalty but blazed it over the bar.
Full Time 0-2. In a summary it was a hard fought win against a good side. Whilst Evesham weren’t at their best, Nunnery made them work for everything they got so credit to them for a good game.
Reporters POM Beattie Jutel, POM Yaz Gachette.
Next up for Evesham is a trip to Wyre Forest on Sunday KO 2pm.
