Match Report by Simon Purfield
In front of Taunton Town’s highest attendance of the season, numbering 1,298 supporters, Evesham United secured the crucial point they needed to guarantee their safety, with a goalless encounter. The outcome was influenced by Weymouth’s 2-0 defeat at Berkhamsted, which allowed Evesham to climb to 18th place in the table.
On a warm afternoon in Somerset, Evesham United started on the front foot. However, it was Taunton Town who fashioned the first clear opportunity after six minutes when Owen Brain lofted a pass into Dan Koita, who controlled the ball on his chest but sent his volley high and wide. Evesham responded quickly, with Andre Wright firing a snapshot over the bar.
Taunton enjoyed the better chances for most of the first half but were unable to trouble Alex Harris in the Evesham goal. On 19 minutes, Alfie Moulden found space inside the Evesham box and chipped to the back post, where Scott Robinson’s header clipped the top of the bar. Shortly after the half-hour, Brain made a superb run past three defenders, but his cross only resulted in a corner. In the 36th minute, Kai Churchley tried his luck with a first-time shot that sailed over the bar for Evesham.
Evesham’s best chance of the half came from a central free kick 25 yards out, taken by Wright, though his attempt was blocked by the Taunton wall. Two minutes before the break, Taunton produced some slick one-touch football to unlock the Evesham defence, ending with a shot from Moulden that Harris saved comfortably. Play was then halted for a lengthy period due to a medical incident in the stands.
The second half provided fewer clear-cut chances, a scenario that suited Evesham United. After 56 minutes, Harry Shield delivered a dangerous cross, which Harris did well to save. Churchley then saw a shot gathered by Taunton keeper Godden. Around the midway point, Ethan Dunbar beat the offside trap and shot from an angle, only to see his effort drift past the right-hand post.
With eight minutes left, a lofted pass found Ben Seymour, who controlled well and forced another good save from Harris. As the match neared its conclusion, Evesham nearly took the lead when a clearance from Nick Grimes almost resulted in an own goal, only for Godden to palm the ball away following a corner. At the other end, Jack Rice’s free kick was met decisively by Mike Barber, whose header rattled the visitors’ crossbar.
Nearly eight minutes of added time saw nerves jangling amongst the travelling Evesham supporters, especially as news spread of the result at Berkhamsted. Evesham held firm to see out the match, and at the final whistle, jubilant celebrations erupted among the away fans, players and management. A determined and committed display did the trick against the in-form team in the division.
Evesham United survived on goal difference, finishing with -11 compared to Weymouth’s -18. Weymouth have now suffered relegation for the second season in succession. Remarkably, this match marked Evesham’s first clean sheet away from home in the league all season. For only the second time in the club’s history, Evesham have secured Step 3 football for consecutive seasons.
After the final whistle, Chairman Ged Bearcroft expressed his gratitude to the supporters for their backing at Taunton and throughout the entire season, acknowledging how much their support was appreciated.
