Match Report by Simon Corbett
On a cold November afternoon, Evesham Utd Women welcomed Worcester City Lionesses to the Spiers & Hartwell Stadium in a Worcestershire WFA County Cup 2nd Round fixture with both sides on good unbeaten runs. Manager Mark Taylor made three changes, with Kate Mills, Yaz Gachette, and Clare Williams all restored to the starting lineup. Ria Salleh and Grace Dolphin were back amongst the substitutes.
From the first whistle, the home side were on top with Mills a constant pacey threat from the right, and it was Mills with a cross/shot from the right who got an early effort away, saved by the visiting keeper. Olivia Tresinge, Grace Finch and Gachette controlled the midfield, and a goal looked inevitable with dominant attacking play and countless corners being cleared by a resolute Lionesses back line.
When Evesham did get into good shooting positions, they found the keeper, Fiona Williams, in fine form, saving well from Finch more than once. Striker Saff Boswell had a goal ruled out for offside, and it took the visitors past the half-hour mark to put the home side’s defence under pressure, which they dealt with comfortably. Nearing the end of the first half, Tresigne and Finch were again denied by the overworked keeper, and a corner went agonisingly wide from the head of Kyra Bostock to end a frustrating half for the home side.
The second half began in the same vein as the first, with Tresigne again shooting wide before the visitors took a surprise lead with their first shot on target. A through ball just evaded the outstretched Bostock, and the Lionesses forward Cooly dispatched wide of keeper Chloe Raxter for the opening goal.
Substitutions were made with Tullulah Brown, Ella Parkinson and Salleh coming on to commit further numbers forward, with Mills also joining the front line. Parkinson was causing problems on the right, and it was her cross that was met by Brown, only for her shot to be straight at the keeper. With Evesham committing more players forward looking for the equaliser, Worcester now looked a threat on the break, this was aided largely by the strange decision to Sin Bin Salleh and Captain Charlotte “Chopper” Pitts with only 15 minutes left to play.
The decisions continued to baffle, with Brown booked for retrieving the ball so the game could continue quickly. Salleh and Pitts returned to the field for the closing minutes, but the visitors saw out the time and go into the hat for the next round.
Evesham were left wondering, but they’ll soon put the cup exit behind them as they return to league action against Kingfisher Development on Sunday, 23-11-25.
