Match Report by Simon Corbett
On another wet Sunday afternoon, top of the table Evesham Utd Women welcomed Bromsgrove Sporting Development in what was expected to be a tough encounter. Playing on the 3G due to the terrible weeks weather, Manager Mark Taylor brought Jess Kenny back into the stating line up with Liv Tresigne unavailable in the only change from the win at Welland. Chloe Dyer was back with the squad, having been absent through injury since the first game of the season.
The hosts were out of the starting blocks quickly with Grace Finch shooting wide and then forcing the Keeper into action following Grace Dolphin’s excellent cross, just evading onrushing players. Saff Boswell and Tallulah Brown both had shots saved by the increasingly busy keeper.
Play switched to the other end briefly with a timely tackle from Beattie Jutel snuffing out a Bromsgrove breakaway. Evesham finally took a deserved lead when Finch fired in from distance, straight over the keeper and into the roof of the net.
Jutel and Brown exchanged passes with the excellent Jutel shooting wide. Jess Kenny had a fine shot that just went over and the keeper saved her next effort.
Ella Parkinson was using her great pace on the right wing, putting in some teasing crosses which were cleared by the visitors’ resolute defence.
An early change saw Emma Stevens coming on for the injured Dolphin. Evesham were still searching for the second goal with another Kenny shot over, Boswell stinging the keeper’s hands, Finch hitting the bar and post before the second goal finally arrived. An interchange between Kenny and Finch saw the impressive Kenny score a deserved goal with a fine finish.
Evesham would be forgiven for thinking that they had created a bit of a cushion for themselves but within a minute, Bromsgrove striker Natalie Sewell was chasing a through ball towards the out rushing Chloe Raxter who as she got to the edge of the box was caught in two minds before seeing the ball squirm from her hands right into the path of Sewell who made no mistake and tucked the ball home for 2-1.
The second half started with the rain getting heavier. Evesham started fast again, a Boswell shot from the left went narrowly over, Finch presented Kenny a chance, which went wide. The game was becoming more even with Bromsgrove looking dangerous on the counterattack, so Captain Chopper Pitts, Kyra Bostock, Stevens, Jutel and the Screening Yaz Gachette had to be on alert.
Chanel Gittus and the returning Chloe Dyer were introduced with a third needed to see off a determined Bromsgrove, and it finally arrived when Kenny’s free kick from out wide was deflected past the unfortunate Rebecca Meah for 3-1.
A hard-fought victory in increasingly difficult conditions. Player of the Match, Jess Kenny.
Next game is on Sunday away at Inkberrow 2 pm KO.
