Match Report by Simon Corbett
On a damp and dreary day in Evesham, we welcomed Ludlow Town Women to the Spiers & Hartwell Stadium for this Midwest Counties League fixture.
The home side started quickly with an early pass from Grace Finch finding Tallulah Brown in a good position before being scrambled away by the visitors’ defence. A move on the left involving Kyra Bostock, Captain Chopper Pitts and Beattie Jutel resulted in a shot from Jess Kenny narrowly clearing the crossbar.
The first goal came with the persistence of Grace Finch, who went past the last defender and made no mistake for 1-0. The second goal came only two minutes later with a move starting at the feet of Keeper Chloe Raxter. Her pass into Bostock was played into midfield, whereby Finch and Liv Tresigne combined to find Full Back Jutel, who coolly finished to the keeper’s left.
Kenny and the combative Yaz Gachette combined on the right with a cross rolling along the goal line, with Pitts unable to convert when well placed. Tresigne continued to find the further forward Kate Mills, whose shot was saved by the keeper, before Brown fired another shot over the bar.
The third goal came a minute before the break when the tenacity of pressing the opposition and winning the ball back saw Finch score her second for a halftime lead of 3-0.
Evesham made a substitute at half time with Grace Dolphin on for the excellent Jutel, and the second half started more evenly with the visitors looking more dangerous, but the home side still had chances with Bostock narrowly heading wide from a Tresigne corner. Kenny’s shot was palmed behind, and a great move between Tresigne, Mills on the right, found Finch, who hit her strike straight at the keeper.
Then, Ludlow, for all their hard work, deservedly found the net to breach the Evesham defence for the first time in the league this season. A free kick wasn’t defended well, and an easy finish was applied.
More substitutions followed with Helen Bourne, Ella Parkinson, Saff Boswell and debutant Emma Stevens, who was returning to competitive action after a long knee injury, came into the game. Parkinson with her first touch shot wide, then a corner on the left saw a foul in the box on Bostock, leading to a penalty and a visitor’s player being sent off for retaliation after an off-the-ball incident.
Finch stepped up to take the resulting penalty and scored to complete her hat trick. The final action of the game saw Boswell’s shot cleared off the line before the ball hit the post, finally ending in Gachette blazing over.
A comfortable 4-1 victory in the end and good preparation for what is likely to be a tough test on Sunday, 25/01/26, when we visit Dudley Town Ladies KO 2 pm.
