Pitching In Southern League Premier South

Match Report by Simon Purfield

The hosts made a more promising start in the Southern League Premier South fixture against Farnham Town. Although Evesham enjoyed a greater share of possession during the opening period, the only notable attempt in the first fifteen minutes was an Andre Wright shot, which was blocked.

The match came to life at the half-hour mark when Evesham broke the deadlock. A long ball from defence was flicked on by Andre Wright to Kai Churchley, who was named Player of the Match. Churchley played a short pass into the path of Levi Steele, who struck the ball into the bottom right corner of the net. Moments later, Steele had another chance from an Aaron Heap cross, but his header was comfortably saved by Farnham’s goalkeeper, Mike Eacott.

Farnham then found their way back into the contest unexpectedly in the 38th minute. Bobby-Joe Taylor delivered a cross from the right following a short corner, which was unfortunately deflected into the net by an Evesham player. Just two minutes later, Taylor sent in another corner that Mat Mackenzie headed over from close range, and Dan Bayliss fired a shot over the bar from the edge of the box.

The shift in momentum towards Farnham at the end of the first half persisted into the second period. Farnham produced a well-worked team move featuring quick, sharp passes, culminating in Joe Jackson curling a shot into the left far corner to give the visitors the lead. Shortly thereafter, Taylor cut inside from the right wing, but his low shot was saved. Evesham goalkeeper Alex Harris remained busy, making successive saves from Jack Dean and Taylor.

As the match reached the halfway point of the second half, Evesham had arguably their best opportunity. A corner was cleared but quickly recycled in midfield and sent back into a crowded penalty area. After frantic defending and at least four goal attempts within ten seconds, Farnham managed to clear the danger.

In the 73rd minute, Mackenzie found the net, but the effort was ruled out for offside. Two minutes later, Alex Harris delivered a free kick, which Ioan Richards headed over while running, and Richards subsequently left the field with a head injury.

Farnham regained control, and Owen Dean was played through the centre of the Evesham defence, but Harris did well to save his low shot. Another impressive Farnham move ended with Joe Jackson wrong-footing Harris, only for his strike to crash against the crossbar.

In added time, Evesham won a corner, and the ball eventually fell to Cam Walters, whose shot went past the left-hand post.

Evesham have now suffered four defeats in their last five matches but remain in mid-table, occupying 10th place. Their next fixture is an away trip to 14th-placed Chertsey Town on Saturday.
