Match Report by Simon Purfield

Substitute Lewis Middleton emerged as Evesham United’s hero, netting a late winner to seal their first league double of the season at the expense of visiting Weymouth. The game was a closely fought contest, with both sides struggling to carve out clear opportunities.

Evesham started brightly and appeared to take an early lead in the seventh minute when Ethan Dunbar found the net after latching onto a pass from Levi Steele. However, celebrations were cut short as the goal was ruled out for offside.

Weymouth responded with their first meaningful chance courtesy of captain Tom Bearwish, but his shot was comfortably dealt with by Robins’ goalkeeper Alex Harris. The hosts continued to press, with Josh Barlow sending an effort wide following good work from Kai Churchley. Churchley remained at the centre of the action, seeing his powerful drive cleared off the line by the Weymouth defence, and his follow-up volley failed to trouble the keeper, flying wide of the target.

As the first half wore on, Bearwish found space on the edge of the penalty area but dragged his shot wide. Just before the interval, a corner for Evesham caused chaos in the box, the ball eventually falling to Amer Awadh, who fired wide as the half ended goalless.

After the restart, Weymouth’s Andreas Robinson had an early opportunity to give the visitors the lead, but his drive was straight at Harris, who gathered comfortably. The match remained evenly poised, with the feeling that a single goal could decide the outcome.

Ten minutes into the second period, Evesham’s Ioan Richards produced a crucial last-ditch tackle to deny a Weymouth striker a clear shot on goal, preserving the deadlock.

As the half progressed, Evesham began to control possession but struggled to create clear-cut chances. Weymouth threatened on the break, with Euan Pollock linking up well to set up Barney Stone, only for the Evesham defence to block his shot. Pollock again threatened to unlock the defence as the match entered its final stages, combining with Stone, whose effort was once more blocked by the resolute home back line.

With just six minutes remaining, the breakthrough arrived. Goalkeeper Alex Harris launched a long ball towards Andre Wright, whose flick-on released substitute Lewis Middleton. Middleton raced clear and finished superbly into the bottom right corner, sending the home fans into jubilation behind the goal.

Weymouth almost snatched an immediate equaliser when Brandon Goodship found himself unmarked five yards out, but he failed to hit the target with the visitors’ best chance of the game.

This crucial victory marked Evesham United’s first win in four matches, lifting them up to 13th in the league table. Their next fixture is an away trip to Farnham Town on Saturday.
