Pitching In Southern League Premier Division South
Match Report by Simon Purfield
Evesham United faced Uxbridge, another recently promoted side, in the Southern League Premier Division, entering the encounter on a three-match unbeaten home league streak. Despite missing players Jyrel Bojang, Lewis Middelton, and Will Owens, Evesham began the match with determination, particularly with Ethan Dunbar, who was named Player of the Match, returning to the starting eleven. Dunbar created two early opportunities, breaking through the defence but, with limited support, was forced to take on the chances himself. Both efforts were denied as the Uxbridge goalkeeper pushed the shots around the post for corners.
By the 24th minute, Dunbar had continued to threaten, tallying three more attempts that were either saved or missed the target. On the half-hour mark, a well-worked move involving Josh Barlow and Dunbar set up Andre Wright, whose shot was also saved by the Uxbridge keeper.
Uxbridge gradually settled into the game and started to assert themselves. In the 34th minute, they came close to opening the scoring when a swift cross flashed across the six-yard box, only for a forward’s touch to deflect the ball out for a corner. Shortly afterwards, Cole Brown unleashed a powerful shot from outside the box, which was tipped over the bar by Evesham’s goalkeeper, Alex Harris.
Approaching half-time, Jamal Smith delivered a dangerous ball in from the right, narrowly missing the far post. Despite Evesham having the lion’s share of possession, the first half ended goalless.
Early in the second half, a defensive error by Uxbridge presented Wright with a chance, but his shot was straight at goalkeeper Laurie Shala. Dunbar also tested Shala soon after, but the effort was comfortably saved.
As the half progressed, Uxbridge grew into the contest and enjoyed more possession. On the hour mark, they created a notable opportunity when a cross was met with a header, which went wide of the goal. The game became increasingly scrappy as both sides battled for control.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 76th minute when Uxbridge substitute Liam Prior-Tack finished from close range, slotting the ball into the bottom left corner. Just five minutes later, the visitors doubled their lead; another substitute Kai Hobbs capitalised on a fortunate bounce to volley home from twelve yards.
Evesham responded a minute before injury time, as Rhys Bennett’s corner was met by centre-half Ioan Richards, whose header found the top of the net, halving the deficit.
Uxbridge held on to secure a 2–1 victory, collecting all three points as they returned to London and moving up to fourth place in the league table. Evesham, meanwhile, dropped to eighth.
The Robins will next travel to face Plymouth Parkway on Saturday, 1st November.
