Pitching In Southern League Premier Division South

Match Report by Simon Purfield

Evesham United climbed to fifth place in the Southern League Premier Division South following a narrow 1-0 win over Hanwell Town, marking their third consecutive home league victory.

Hanwell Town registered the first shot of the match in the sixth minute. Evesham’s initial opportunity came when Andre Wright played in Aaron Heap, but Heap’s effort was easily gathered by Hanwell’s goalkeeper, Sam Beasant.

The visitors remained the more dominant side for the opening 25 minutes, although they failed to seriously threaten the Evesham goal. In the 27th minute, Evesham thought they had taken the lead; Ioan Richards delicately headed the ball over Beasant, but the goal was disallowed for offside.

At the half-hour mark, Kam English produced some good play, driving in a low shot which was kept out by Evesham’s Alex Harris thanks to a quick reaction save. Shortly after, a promising move down the right saw Woodcock deliver a cross that eventually found English, whose subsequent shot struck the side netting.

In the 37th minute, Evesham suffered a setback when goalkeeper Harris was forced off with a knee injury. He was replaced by Brendan Beard, the youngster making his first-team debut.

With four minutes remaining until halftime, Levi Steele broke the offside trap and attempted to lob Beasant, but his effort drifted wide of the goal. The first half concluded without either side finding the net.

After a scrappy first half, the game changed when Ethan Dunbar, who would be named Player of the Match, was introduced in place of Levi Steele on the hour. Dunbar made an immediate impact, latching onto a ball over the top from Josh Barlow. He skilfully evaded a defender and slotted the ball past Beasant, just inside the right post, to give Evesham the lead.

Dunbar came close to doubling his tally shortly afterwards, rapidly pressing Beasant and forcing a clearance that narrowly missed the target. He remained a constant threat, with Lewis Middleton setting him up for another attempt; Dunbar showed excellent skill, though his shot was blocked by the Hanwell defence.

Throughout the remainder of the match, Evesham United’s defence remained composed and effectively dealt with any pressure from Hanwell Town, ensuring the Robins secured victory at the final whistle.

Attention now turns to Evesham’s next match, which takes place against Hanwell’s neighbours, Uxbridge, on Saturday at the Spiers and Hartwell Stadium.
